Mark debates Republican Strategist Mike Lane on:
1) Why Republicans keep losing in Congressional special elections;
2) Why Bush has brought domestic politics to Israel;
3) Obama v. McCain on Iran; and
4) The California Supreme Court decision allowing gay citizens to marry.
Mark,
I enjoy your show.
You like to praise anti-trust laws. I'm curious if you have been exposed to the other side of the debate. Here is an example:

Also, it would be interesting to see you discuss general economic/political theory with Ron Paul. Wondering if you could ever have him on.
Take care.
Posted by: DA at May 23, 2008 2:07 PMWhen a company has a monopoly such as providing enrergy to a city or a state. It is a natural monopoly. I have one power line attached to my house. If that "Big" company (which is the only company) decides to cut back on service and charge higher prices. one just cannot end their contract and pick up another energy provider.
Apply this to oil companies and their effect at the pump. Sure you can go down the street to the next gas station. But their price is within pennies if not same or higher.
Anti trust laws haven't been aplied in the citizens of America's behalf since President Carter. Reagan stopped its enforcement and no President since has used it as it was intended.
That is why in the video they talk of most use of anti trust is business vs business.
It is amazing what people forget of past laws. There would never have been a need for President Roosevelt to take the country in the New Deal direction if private industry and wealth were not human with natural weaknesses that prevent business (economics) from working for people and their communities, than enslaving people to corporations (economics).
We have seen corporate take overs in our media and what has happened to our news. An informed people have a better chance to make informed decisions/votes for their country's democracy than what we are now being provided with. We can turn off the TV or radio, Return a year later to the same trash only worse. These are monopolies in the communications/media realm that we can do nothing about. If General Dynamics is a major defense contractor (As a monopoly) and buys and owns a major TV network. It does not and will not provide journalism into anything that would harm their defense contracting.
If FOX News ( and I use news liberally here) Is allowed to own TV stations in a city along with Radio and news Print. All those people in that city are going to know isand hear is the same thing. No matter Print, Radio, TV.
I agree with DA, it would make for a good issue for a show. How our U.S. corporations could not exist without Gov't regulations. Regulations that are always vilified. It is the Gov't that business gians its encorporated shield from. It is the Oil companies that Americans are dying for in Iraq. Blackwater et al could not do it on their own. They needed the U.S. taxpayers money as well to fund the business adventure in oil investment.
I think we already observed history repeat its ecomonic glutoonly over the sub prime mortages. That I understand might not have happened if the Glass steagal act had not been tossed out.
Corporations need big Gov't because of such advantages as taking all those risks on the mortages that are to provide high returns for those risk takers/investors. Gov't is there as their Social Security net. That in which many corporatists do not like the middle class and poor to have. Thats another story.
As a well regulated militia formed protected this country.
So to is a well regulated capitalism.
Posted by: Robt at May 23, 2008 11:13 PMWe have slowly become the United States of Corporations instead of America. When joe public wakes up out of the fog of propaganda we get from our corporate media then maybe we can make some changes. Electing reps that have this fact and are willing to do something about it would be the first step into reclaiming this democracy so many of our ancestors fought and died for. We as in the masses have forgotten our history and what it really stood for and it sure wasn't corporations to reap profits at the cost of the public good.
Posted by: madfuq at May 24, 2008 2:09 PMI heard a 2 part question I took to asking of some people just off the cuff in conversations.
Non partisan at that. I was surprized how many knew the first and were at a loss for the second part of the question.
Try it.
PT 1
Name 3 of the Three Stooges?
PT 2
Name three of the Supreme Court Justices?
Its disheartening.......................
Posted by: Robt at May 25, 2008 1:13 PMRobt, yeah we are so dumbed down as a society anymore it's scary. The last SCJ's appointed by the current regime scares me to death there ideology from some of their decisions are so against our constitution and the only way to get rid of them is to impeach them. Lots of luck with the congress we have now to uphold that!
Oh, Scott McClellan we hardly knew ye--you finally give the proper White House press release--how sweet it must be for you--to finally tell the truth
Posted by: Whoops E. Doodle at May 28, 2008 10:03 AMTelling the truth or promoting a book for sale?
Lying traitor he is.
Scotty, does that help book sales? Sorry you couldn't find work after the W.H Press Secretary thing. I make for bad resume's.
Your pal GW......
Madfuq,
It is a concerning item indeed. I understand the dumbed down, they never new better.
For the most I believe it is simply what many people decide to give their attention to. Time is a scarce commodity. many people are working 5-7 days a week. I am one of them. Others have short attention spans. Then their are the ones that are disenchanted with some idealistic dreams of our Gov't should be while they neglect to hold their public officials feet to the fire.
We have watched this President and their henchmen (and women) escape any responsibility for their failures. No remorse or penalties for using their public positions to direct wealth to cronies. Getting re elected by decrying family values and praising the Lord, while the whole time having flagrant aulterous affairs on tax payer expense accounts.
Their hasn't been enough outcry to impeach a President that is at the head of much criminalities. From propaganering the American people into war that he sets up in a greedy war profiteering manner. Where the contractors are paid heavily, recieve their equipment and support first while our military must wait for the Iraqi military to be outfitted before our own get the needed equipment to perform their orders of being a bulls eye for hostile people we are told we are bringing democracy to at the barrel of a gun.
Wow, this much that fast. I better stop here before I write a set of six books.
Robt--you might want to incorporate a space alien into the plot--that only George Bush can see and hear
Posted by: Gort Beranga at May 30, 2008 9:56 AMGort,
Please elaborate................?
How exactly would you incorporate a space alien?
Posted by: Robt at May 31, 2008 1:30 AMCall the E-T--Plasmodium and have him be a psychic friend of GW's ever since Bush passed out from choking on a peanut--but any sorta trauma will do--Plasmodium can be under the direction of powerful forces being directed from an asteroid just this side of Uranus--then have Plasmodium become a psychic friend to John McCain--the possibilities are endless
